When you hear the term "Barmy Army", you might imagine a group of enthusiastic, and perhaps slightly mad sports fans. And you'd be right—but there's more to the Barmy Army than just their love for cricket. They are the heart and soul of English cricket, that brings passion, humor, and unwavering support wherever England plays, including Hamilton for the Test Series in December!
The origins of the Barmy Army
The Barmy Army was formed in 1994 during England's Ashes tour of Australia. A small group of dedicated English fans traveled down under to support their team. Despite England's struggles on the field, these fans never lost their spirit. They sang, chanted, and cheered relentlessly, earning the affectionate nickname "Barmy Army" from the Australian media for their seemingly irrational enthusiasm in the face of adversity.
What started as a handful of passionate fans quickly grew into an organised and influential supporters' group. The Barmy Army became synonymous with England's cricket tours abroad, and their presence in the stands became a fixture at matches around the world.
What makes the Barmy Army special?
The Barmy Army is known for their distinctive chants, songs and trumpeter. Their songs are often humorous, poking fun at opposing teams or celebrating England's cricketing heroes.
But the Barmy Army isn't just about having a good time. They are a well-organised group with a strong sense of community. They arrange travel packages, accommodation, and tickets for members, making it easier for fans to follow the England cricket team wherever they play. They also engage in charitable activities, raising funds for various causes, including supporting grassroots cricket initiatives.
So, when you’re sat in Seddon Park this summer and you hear the unmistakable chants of the Barmy Army echoing through the stadium, know that you are witnessing a tradition that goes beyond the boundaries of the pitch—a celebration of cricket and the unbreakable spirit of its fans.
